Warning
It's about a thing that everybody misses today: Question everything!
Why we gotta get this opression? If we say something, they tell us to shut up, and the people who do this are the ones who should be protecting us, like police and politicians.

i think that warning is about being ok with (or not even knowing about ) the danger in your everyday life. the way that the character ignores the natural warnings that come with being alive is very weird. (maybe the guy sniffed just a little too much glue).

It's about not listening to the warnings in society and defying em just to be rebellious. Like drinking sour milk (from the music video) nobody wants to but he's doing it to spite authority.

I think this song is about, living without warnings. So basically, doing a lot of dangerous things. Such as, taking sweets from strangers, microwaving food whilst still in the packet etc. This song shows many different dangers, and hopefully meens, don't try any of it yourselves..

Church On Sunday is a person's way of saying: "Don't leave me."
That the person will do anything and even go to church every sunday, just for one single date with the other person (If i promise to go to Church On Sunday, Will you go with me on Friday night?)

When asked about the song "Church on Sunday" off the album Warning:
"It's a song about when you're in a long-term relationship with somebody you have to keep reinventing. And it takes a lot of compromise. The person you're married to or that you're with a year or two down the line - there's a lot of different sides of them that you have to come to recognize or be sensitive to or that you never knew were there before. And so likewise cause I'm sure with Adrienne there's a lot of sides of me that she didn't quite expect."

it's about how you can have all the material objects in the world but you might not really be all that happy. It also about how hard people try to fit in with the crowd.

I interpret this song as being about the celebrity lifestyle and how it's not all it's cracked up to be. "You auctioned off your life, for the most expensive price" is basically saying that you've given up a normal life for the most expensive price, which I would assume is privacy or good morals.

Castaway
This song was written by Billie Joe, and is based on him writing songs which he knew all his old Gilman Street friends would disown him for. It is about him feeling like the roots and foundations of the band have been torn up. He knew that to progress as a songwriter he had to do this, and so wrote the song about being a 'Castaway'. He knew the old crew would not support him. I think it is more about the band 'going at it alone' rather than him as an individual. I read someone even wrote on a wall 'Billie Joe must die' after this album came out...

I think it's about this person who is taking a path in life that is leading them into nothing but dead ends and there's no turning back, "of no return and no looking back or down" he has nowhere to turn but also, not back and down means forward and up, which means that we have this outcast character who seems to have gone off the tracks a bit but despite being completely lost and alone they keep looking up and trying to carry on. Quite an inspirational thought really.

Could be about Billie Joe giving up trying to be a part of the crowd and "going at it alone" as an individual. Or about a journey of self-discovery or nostalgia ("I'm on a sentimental journey") Either way, I interpret it as a positive song.

Misery
Misery is a concept song, about a whole bunch of characters (Virginia, Mr. Whirly, Vinnie, and Gina) whose mistakes lead them to their misfortunes.
Posted by Marshall on August 07 2009
This is clearly a story song about many interesting characters running rampant through different cities, killing and getting killed, and also marrying (and I'm pretty sure two women end up eloping somewhere in the song). One of my personal favorite Green Day songs; its sound is amazingly Aladdin-esque and I love it!

i remember reading that the whole album was about the downside of success and well i think it is about how if you hit fame or become successful there is always a bad side or a chance of failure. "he liquidated his estate." also more generally the ugly side of life e.g running away from home, going broke, and being whacked. In the bridge just before the solo it makes references to the media and how they don't really care what good you do but what mistakes you make and wont stop until they are satisfied.

Deadbeat Holiday This song is full of bitter sarcasm and yet in the end it comes down to expressing quite a sentimental point. The lyrics describe a life so miserable and unsuccessful that it's almost not worth living. Everything is going wrong - "the house is on fire, and the cat's caught in the dryer". Gradually life's going down the drain; "celebrate your own decay" - it looks like everything has fallen apart and there is no hope. So, it just might be not worth the fight and the right way out might be to end it all - "there's a vacant sign that's hanging high on the noose over your home". But even when everything seems way too messed up, and you feel like dying, all you really want to do is not give up. Even during the most difficult times you want to look at the brighter side of life and hope that a change for the better will come soon - whether it will or not.

Hold On "I had a friend of mine that three of his friends passed away in one year so I wrote the song for him" - Armstrong.
In this song we can see the pain of being left alone and having nothing and no one to hold on to ("nothing's left to cling on to"). The lyrics metaphorically describe the way from stepping "to the edge of the shadow of a doubt", to realizing that you need to make it through the night and even if it's not what you want, you know that you need to reach the break of day, and just wait for when it gets better. You need to hold on to yourself when there's nothing else left to hold on to, because after all, the only thing you really wouldn't be able to live without is yourself.

Waiting "It's about putting your best foot forward, even if you don't have any idea what's in store for the future, about trying to make a difference in your own life, about having high goals even though you're not fully sure of what you want or where you're going to end up. You just keep moving forward and don't give up." - Armstrong.
Waiting is a very emotional song filled with optimism and positivity. The narrator is describing his feelings about his future and opportunities. This moment that he's been waiting for is not something material, but simply the time when he feels he can start a new life, do something he wouldn't have dared to do before. He is now open to something new and willing to take risks, even though he has no idea what exactly he's going to do and what's waiting for him in the future. It's the "dawning of a new era", the narrator wants to make some major change in his life, try to do something big, something that will make a difference. He doesn't know whether he will succeed or fail, but this moment he's been waiting for is now here, "ready or not at all".

This is my favorite GD song. To me, it talks about the way it can be when life seems to be going your way, when your dreams seem like they are actually in sight, but then, BAM, things turn to shit and you are back where you were. To me it's a song about having your hopes dashed and the futility we can sometimes feel as we struggle to go toward our dreams.

This song is really close to me, it's always been my favorite. To me, the song is about life giving you a chance or opportunity that you've waited for. Not necessarily something big, but just something that means something to you. Or that changes your life, even if it's in a small way. The reason I love it so much is because we're all waiting on something to happen, but most of us are too busy with what's going on to realize that all these small moments and opportunities are passing us by.

The reason I love it so much is because we're all waiting on something to happen, but most of us are too busy with what's going on to realize that all these small moments and opportunities are passing us by.

Minority
"Minority is about being an individual. It's like you have to sift through the darkness to find your place and be that individual you want to be your entire life." - Armstrong.
Being a minority is hard. The discrimination and persecution that go with it often scare people out of expressing beliefs and opinions that would make them a part of a minority. They suppress their individuality for the sake of public acceptance as well as out of fear of being intimidated.
Minority tells us to stand for our beliefs and not jump on the band wagon at the expense of our own individuality. No matter how many people will give you their "for crying out loud" furious lectures, you're still "your own sight" and shouldn't let authority make up your mind for you. So many people hold back their beliefs ("the silence of a thousand broken hearts"), while you're really better off being who you are even if that will make you a part of a discriminated minority, than lying to yourself and pretending to be the moral majority that you really don't belong to. After all, we all have the same rights - "a free for all, fuck them all!"

This song is about being yourself! And not let anyone oppress you for being yourself! The true song of rebellion to me ("I don't need your authority")

Liking what's important to you, not caring about what other people think about it or you. Not wanting or caring about other's imput. Being different because that's what you like and not caring about what other people think.

I think this song is what life must be about to everybody, to live doing whatever you believe in not being a "sheep in the herd." believe in yourself and no one else and maybe that's what billie joe was thinking on when he wrote it maybe because he's different from so many others, some people could say 'why aren't u like this one or that one?' and it's like a way to say fuck it! I'll be whatever I wanna be I don't give a shit about what you say this is my life and I'm being a minority.
that's what 'minority' means to me and it really helps me to be what I like to be (:

It's sort of implying that the majority of people these days all go with the flow. Usually, if you're seen as different, people frown upon you, sort of saying "hey, don't be different, enjoy the same things as everyone else. be normal," and Billie is sort of just telling you to be whoever the hell you want to be. Be your own loser, LIKE starwars if you want (-shifty eyes-), be a punk, and if anyone doubts you, or disagrees with your beliefs, don't take it in. just say:
"fuck you, i'm not one of your fucking clones, I'm not trying to satisfy you. I'm a Punk, a minority, and i don't want to be your description of 'perfect', so get the fuck out."
It's the true meaning of punk, really. And it's totally what i believe in you guys! and i think Green Day is a minority in its own sort of way. XD!!!!!

It would be about being yourself and not being ashamed of it, in fact being proud of it. It does not matter if other people don't like you or what you stand for as long as you stick to it and let your opinion be heard.

to me this song is what punk and green day is all about - to live under no ones expectations but your own - to me that's what the true meaning of punk is - so really punk is what ever the hell you want it to be - that's the way I live but you don't care

i think that this song means that you don't need any authority or permission to be yourself and to stand out from the crowd. Green Day is a great example of a minority - they are a band that stands out and are not afraid to show it - that's also a huge thing about being punk - you're not just a clone of everything else that's around you - you're just you!!!!!

Its about not listening to all things authority has to say about everything. It tells you that authority is not your friend and that you should differ from the majority. Be yourself.

This is like my freaking theme song. It's about not wanting to be a person that always fits in and is part of that majority that thinks alike and acts alike . Its about being your own person and standing out from the crowd and not being in line with the other idiots that look like they share a brain, no matter if that means being excluded from a group

Minority is about being an individual, and being proud of it. This song really speaks out to me, it reminds me of school and telling the teachers to fuck off and let me be who i am, not to try and mould me into the perfect pupil.

This song is about wanting to be different from the crowd, wanting to be the minority, not wanting to be like everyone else, being the "diamond in the rough", being the "single black dot on the white sheet of the cookie cutter versions of human beings", being DIFFERENT.

It's the sequel to Warning : we've questioned everything, they've tried to oppress us, we'll fight them for what they've done. It's a song about rebellion and being a unique character that basically is you.

Macy's Day Parade
This album had alot of governmental and economical elements put into it. It really shows in this song. "Economy sized dreams of hope". I think it also has to do with media and advertisments and if something appeals to our own interests were bound to look more in depth to it.
