This [song] is about how Billie Joe saw a girl he liked at the library, and how he was nervous to talk to her.

Billie wrote this song about a girl he saw in the library and liked. "Hey there lookin' at me. Tell me what do you see?" "Try to find the words I could use, don't have the courage to come up to you...". He thought he'd have a chance but then he found out she was seeing someone. "Staring across the room, are you leaving soon, I just need a little time. What time? AH!"

I remember Billie saying somewhere that it was about an ugly girl he saw in the library and figured he had a chance with her but then he figured out she already was with someone.

This song is pretty self explanitory, it tells a story of how Billie Joe was at the library and he sees a girl he wants to ask out, and questions himself weither he should or not. Then her boyfriend comes to pick her up and he realizes it wasn't worth it/he lost his chance.
4/5
In this song the narrator is describing his indecisiveness and shyness as he's trying to talk to a girl he likes. He keeps looking at her from a distance and day-dream wondering why he likes her, what it is about her that seems to charm him. He's trying to make himself finally talk to her, but in the end she walks away with her boyfriend, leaving the narrator one-on-one with his thoughts. He's upset, but then again, he knows he probably would have never had the guts to talk to her, and so he lets his feelings towards her rest till the next time he sees her and goes through that doubt and insecurity all over again.
There is a theory that in this song the author is talking about an ugly girl that he thought he had a chance with, but in the end even she turned out to have a boyfriend. However, the lyrics show that he's truly fascinated with the girl, and the words "What is it about you that I adore?" most likely express the narrator's positive interest and awe rather than surprise and doubt. He wants her and doesn't know why, and doesn't have the courage to express his feelings.

I just think it's about thinking out loud kind of. As in Billie Joe is supposed to be studying or reading or something (since he's in a library), but he gets distracted by this girl and randomly wonders if she would go out with him. He wonders if he should just go for it and ask her out but before he actually does anything the girl's boyfriend shows up and they both leave. That leaves Billie to go back to whatever he was doing before he noticed the girl.

In this song the narrator vividly describes his utter despair aroused by the news that someone he deeply cares about is going to leave him. He can't believe how unfair the situation is - he would do anything and go anywhere just to be with this person...but they leave him. It's driving him insane - after everything he's gone through to be with this person, they leave him. And he's trying really hard to understand the reasons, accept what's about to happen and not be selfish, but he can't hold back the pain of his misery and so he screams "Don't leave me!" He's trying to understand what this person feels about leaving him like this, and whether they feel anything at all. He realizes they might never come back. He can't fight his pain and confusion - how could this happen? Life is not fair.

It's a song about desperation when not around the person you love. It makes you wanna scream and kick and punch, and it's just so terrible that it's plain beautiful. I mean- how can you regret having someone to care about instead of plain old apathy...?

I Was There This is the only released Green Day song that was written by their ex-drummer Al Sobrante (
John Kiffmeyer). In this song the author talks about his memories and how he feels about the past. He regrets that it's all over, but doesn't let it bring him down, because there's always tomorrow. He's glad that he's experienced what he has, that he "was there", but he looks into the future because there's still a lot more life to live.

I think that this song is just about the past and how is is indeed "the past". It talks about past girlfriends, names, things he has forgotten, but it also talks about not letting it get him down or causing him too much sorrow. Throughout the song he looks back into his past, good and bad, and also the future. Basically, the moral of the song, to me, is that the past is the past and live for today but don't forget about yesterday. Remember? He said, "There's much more life to live"

It's about looking back on the experiences you've had, and people that you knew but have now become separate from. You remember the people, and the sights, and the place you've been, and you just don't want to forget everything that's happened. A sort of melancholy song, written by John Kiffmeyer. Could be about his experience in Green Day, as he left just after he wrote this song.

This song is about the sadness some people feel about growing up and being distant in time from the good times of their life. The only consolation is that you were there, but that doesn't guarantee that you'll feel happy.
It starts by going backward remembering everything, "looking back upon my life" "each one is a memory I look back on so often".
"I look into the past, and I want to make it last" is clearly defining the thing that missing so much youth days makes you remember almost every time, and by remembering every single detail, you are making it last, and somehow, living it again at least in your mind.
Finally, the constant repetition of "I was there" stresses the sadness about being there and at the same time, gives some consolation about being far away in time from there.

Al Sobrante wrote the lyrics when he was still in Green Day. I think he wrote them about how he knew he was gonna leave Green Day. It seems like in the lyrics, he knew Green Day was gonna be big, and he knew that he could always say that in the beginning that he was there.

Green Day "Green day" is a slang saying for a day spent doing nothing but smoking weed.
Obviously, this song has a lot to do with getting high and the feelings that one experiences from marijuana intoxication. But aside from that, the song also has a few lines about a relationship that is not working out the way the narrator would want it to. Having a green day allows him to think everything over, but all he finds is helplessness and regrets. Yet, he expresses that the relaxation and absent-mindedness of being "stoned" gives him a fresh experience and makes him feel like he has "found something new".

Going to Pasalacqua In this song the narrator is expressing his insecurity and anxiety about a relationship that he's in. He thought the feeling was gone, but it's still there, still in his heart and making him want to be with the one he loves. Thinking about them, he realizes that his attitude hasn't changed a bit and he's still as much in love as he had been before. And so he decides that no matter what he will stay with the person he loves. He doesn't know whether this feeling will last forever, but he's willing to go through the hard times and enjoy being with the loved one for as long as he can.
As for the title of the song, it is quite unclear. There is a common belief that Pasalacqua is/was a funeral home in Rodeo, CA. However, it is difficult to find confirmation or disproof of this unless you were a Rodeo resident at the time the song was written. If it is indeed a funeral home, then it could add another side to the meaning of this song. It might mean that the person the narrator is in love with is dying or could die. And so he is trying to understand whether he wants to still stay with them or not, and decides that it's worth the fight and he wants to stay with the one he loves no matter what, and take whatever this relationship has to give.

I think, in the chorus ("you and I together...we'll run away, far away") Billie is dreaming up what he wishes he and the person in the song could do; how they'll make it through what's happening and how he'll be there for them ("in for nasty weather, but I'll take whatever you can give that comes my way") basically, he knows it's gonna be a bumpy ride, but he doesn't care.

16 One of the first signs of growing up is wishing you didn't have to grow up. When you're a child you want to become a grown-up as soon as possible, it seems to you that it's great to be an adult. But as you get older you start realizing that being young was so much more fun, and you wish you could have that time back, but you can't.
In 16, the narrator expresses his attitude towards the inevitability of growing up and his fear of change. He looks at his friends and sees how they change, and not always for the better. Now everything is different, the carelessness is going away and he starts questioning things, wondering why. This song has no conclusion - the narrator doesn't come to any decision or resolution. He's simply asking rhetoric questions without waiting for an answer - he knows he can't change the way life is, all he can do is just keep living it.

Road to Acceptance In this song the narrator tells the listeners about how much he's always wanted to be accepted by people around him and how much he would sacrifice for this acceptance. This issue is especially big in adolescence when we're trying to figure out who we are, we want to fit in, find friends, belong somewhere. The narrator ponders the eternal need of all humans to be accepted by everyone else, and comes to doubt the goodness of this need. We change ourselves for others, sometimes we live a lie just not to be rejected, but in the end we only hurt ourselves with this lie. The narrator regrets the fact we have to play a role to be accepted by people around us, because we tend to close our eyes to the fact that really "we're all the same", made of the same blood, flesh and bones, and we all "feel the same pain".

Paper Lanterns Paper Lanterns is a song about the aftermath of love. The narrator is talking about a feeling now buried in the back of his heart, after all the days of hoping and dreaming. He now knows that this love has no chance, they are only friends, he got closure. But there is still something left, he still has 'inappropriate' feelings about this person he used to love. "I find it hard to keep control when you're with your boyfriend"...The paper of a faded love and the fire of jealousy give a dangerous combination - paper lanterns. Jealousy is still burning inside this friendship - the narrator realizes that he will never have rest, the remains of love with never let him feel comfortable around this person. He's wondering why he keeps thinking about them - he accepts the fact that they are only friends, and yet he can't help the way he feels, because you can't tell your heart what to do.

Why Do You Want Him? This is Armstrong's first song, he wrote it at the age of 14. This was his way to express his feelings about his mother's new partner - a person that he and his siblings had a strong dislike of.
The author believes that his mother is obsessed with this man, while he doesn't care about her that much and hurts her with his indifference. And so the author is asking why she still wants him when everyone else has already realized that he's not worth her tears or even her attention.
Another interpretation involves feelings of the author's mother towards her first husband - a love that she lost. She can't forget him, "his memory will always dwell" and she still cries over losing a person she truly loved. And now that she has this new partner, she's wondering whether it's okay to fall in love again, whether it would mean betraying her love towards her late husband. And when she decides to dive deep into this relationship she drowns her sorrow in it, gets blinded and might not see that this person she is now with is not as good as he might seem.

The first song Billie Joe wrote, is about a man his mother dated after his father died, and no one in his family, including Billie, cared much for him.

I've always heard that Billie wrote this song when he was 14 about his mother and his step-father that he obviously didn't care for.

It is a song about some guy (most likely Billie) who likes this girl, yet she either likes or is dating another guy. Billie notices that this guy the girl likes is not treating her well. He is asking himself what does she see in him

Why Do You Want Him?

Billie wrote this when he was in his early teens. It was the first song he ever wrote about his new step-father that he absolutely hated, and how he didn't understand what his mom was thinking.

409 In Your Coffeemaker
this song has 2 meanings: the first one is - when billie was in school he put 409 in his teachers coffee, and the 2nd meaning is about how school is a waste of time, "i sit in the state of a daydream as the words fly over my head, even more time gets wasted in my daze"

Billie said this was about some prank he pulled in school where he actually put 409 in one of his teacher's coffeemakers.

This song is basically "looking back now,at where I have gone wrong." (In the chorus) In 2nd or 3rd grade,Billie Joe put formula 409 in his teacher's coffee (Hence the name). So he's looking back at where he's gone wrong, and the part in the chorus:"My interests are longing to break through these chains, these chains that control my future's aim" is him referring to his first thoughts of dropping out of school.

Well, the story goes that Billie Joe once put 409 in his teacher’s coffee. I think it's about when you sick of listening to someone (a teacher), you're going away to another world when they’re talking to you. It is probably also about how annoying it is to be interrupted when you're dazing! Still the chorus tells that it’s a shame that they can’t get along.
I think Billie Joe really wanted to get along, but just couldn't because it was so boring.

1,000 Hours
A very involved picture of a love scene... As Billie himself put it, "That was some pretty sappy shit." Though at the time, it's what they had to write about. Modern day 1,000 Hours? Last Night On Earth. The best love song Billie's written to date (says him).

"Up at your window, I see a shadow; silhouette of your grace." Beautiful imagery!
This song is about sitting outside in the evening being close to the one you love... and having sex with the person "Passionate love to be all night long."

Dry Ice This is one of the songs that Armstrong wrote about his best friend's sister.
The narrator is expressing his genuine feelings towards a girl that inspired him to write this song. He is deeply in love with her, keeps dreaming of her and wants her to be by his side, but he doesn't know if she feels the same way. He doesn't find enough courage in himself to write her a letter, his pen is "writing wrong" and he decides to express his feelings in a song, hoping that she will hear him and understand how much he really needs her.

this song is about loving someone intensely and you are always thinking of her ( i had a dream and she was in it again), and they don't know you love them. so you try and tell them that you love them (send a letter to that girl asking her to be my own, but my pen is writing wrong) and trying to accept the possibility that she may not love you back (will i understand if she wants to be my friend), and finally just plainly saying you love them (i love you more right now more than i've ever loved before, hear these words straight from my lips i'll need you forevermore) definitely one of my favorite songs

Only Of You This song is about love at first sight. The narrator lost sleep and peace because of this person he is so charmed by. He's only seen them once, but it was enough to cause these love-filled thoughts to take over his mind. They are only friends and he doesn't dare tell them how he really feels - all he can do is hope that this wonderful infatuation never ends, and keep dreaming of arousing the same feelings in the one he loves.
This could be another song written about Jennifer, the mysterious girl that rejected Armstrong because she didn't believe his feelings were true ("I wasn't quite there as far as she was concerned, but I was there. I was down. I knew what was up, but she wasn't willing to take that risk so..." - Armstrong).

The One That I Want Most likely another song inspired by the author's feelings towards his best friend's sister. In this song he mentions that she already knows how he feels about her, and so he's wondering why they are still not together and finds no reasons - she made him feel this way, and now she's the only one that he wants. He believes that this love he feels towards this girl will never end. When a teenager falls in love, the feeling is so strong and overwhelming that it seems that it will last forever. It may or may not last, but at the moment it sure feels like this is the love you will feel for the rest of your life.
The One That I Want

This is a classic song of the desperate feelings of young love. The boy is sitting in his room yearning to be with the girl he wants. He can't stand to be separated from her. He's never felt this way before, and he can't stop thinking about her - even when they're apart. He believes his feelings will last, and he's wondering if anything will improve (if they'll be able to get together).

I Want To Be AloneThis song is about a time when you just want to be alone and think. The narrator needs to figure out his own thoughts and find a salvation in his own conflict. Anyone trying to help him would only make it worse because no one except him knows what's happening inside his head. He doesn't want to give any explanations, doesn't want anyone understanding or helping him, all he needs is to be left alone.
